Advances in technology and safety regulations have led to a decrease in the number of crashes over time, but they continue to occur due to a variety of factors such as pilot error, mechanical failure, and bad weather.

The Hindenburg Disaster, 1937

The Hindenburg Disaster, 1937 - The German airship Hindenburg caught fire and crashed while attempting to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 people. The cause of the crash was determined to be a spark caused by static electricity, which ignited the hydrogen gas used to inflate the airship.

9/11 terrorist attacks, 2001 - Four commercial airliners were hijacked by members of al-Qaeda and crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field in Pennsylvania. A total of 2,977 people were killed in the attacks.
